Today, the term GPS is increasingly used. The very term GPS - a satellite navigation system that provides distance measurement, denotes a global positioning system (English Global Positioning System - a global positioning system). It includes 24 satellites that move in their orbits around our planet.

These devices are powered by solar panels and have a service life of about 10 years. They form a whole network that is provided free of charge to civilians. Today, many devices have been created that carry out navigation using a satellite. In addition, it is possible to track the vehicle using GPS, to know its exact coordinates at the current time.

But the buyer is faced with a difficult choice: to buy an expensive device or a Chinese one, which navigator can be considered good? Some are generally held captive by claims that this invention is useless, relying on "more accurate" traditional atlases. Now is the time to sort out the many myths about satellite navigation and the devices that help make it happen.

The receiver only needs to communicate with two satellites for operation. Indeed, the device needs to see at least two satellites to obtain coordinates. This method of positioning is referred to as “two-dimensional fixation”. With it, you can find out your latitude and longitude. But communication with four or more satellites will allow detailed information. The device also begins to show the speed of movement of the object, its height above sea level.

GPS navigators are actually useless, they can easily be replaced by regular maps. This statement has its own logic. Indeed, at one time people quite lived without computers, cars, airplanes and satellites. It's just that GPS navigation has become the next stage in the evolution of technology. It is quite possible to do without such a device, you just have to spend a lot of time to determine the desired country, city, street and house. Then, to this point, you need to lay a rational route, which will take a lot of time. But the GPS-navigator will only need a few minutes for this. At the same time, the device will be able to take into account such nuances as bypassing toll roads, choosing highways, etc. No special skills are required for this. But to work with ordinary cards, a person will need more than one book. You will need a road map of a country, region or city. Plotting the route manually can take hours, because you will also need a final adjustment. It should be understood that you can get to a strange city by passing, so that the cards may not be at hand. How much gasoline and nerves will it cost to return to the correct route? But a complete set of world maps from the famous manufacturer IGO will take about 8 gigabytes, which can easily fit on a medium with an area of less than a square centimeter. A paper version of such a volume of cards will not even fit into the machine. So you can compare a navigator with a regular map, just like a computer with a typewriter.

The main thing in the navigator is the "correct" maps. It is often emphasized that it is the maps and their manufacturer that are important in the navigator. But the chip, processor and RAM fade into the background. In fact, the situation is almost exactly the opposite. When choosing a computer, it is foolish to focus only on the installed operating system and programs. You can put any "software" here, but replacement of components with time can become a problem. The situation is similar with the navigator. But while computer parts are easy to acquire, satellite navigation devices are not so simple. There is usually nothing but the communication chip itself, the battery, the display and the memory. It is on them that you should pay the closest attention when choosing a navigator. After the purchase, they will hardly be improved, in contrast to the card recorded on the carrier. In addition, modern devices often run on Windows or Android operating systems. This allows you to install not just different maps, but entire navigation systems with their own packages. And if you believe in this myth and save money, it turns out that the navigator, even with a good map, will simply work slowly and have a bad screen.

Almost all navigators are made in China, so there is no fundamental difference which device to buy. In fact, this statement is erroneous. Sometimes you really shouldn't believe the labels that guarantee Korean, European or American production. Most often, these products are still Chinese. And despite this, there is a wide gap in quality between individual models, however, as well as for other electronics in general. There are many factories in China, which are equipped in different ways. The most modern ones have a conveyor belt, well-functioning technological processes, and there are those where soldering is carried out "on the knee", and the acquisition is done according to the principle "if only it works." So it's worth choosing proven models with good reviews, even if you have to pay extra for this.

It is better to purchase the navigator directly from Chinese online stores. The first disadvantage of this approach is immediately obvious - there is no guarantee. You will have to deal with an incomprehensible software product, and not the fact that it is in Russian. And in case of a breakdown, you will have to spend time looking for a specialist who will agree to deal with an outlandish gadget. In the end, all these risks outweigh the marginal savings. And the quality of such devices is usually such that breakdowns can follow one after another, which will make the device useless for long-term operation.

The best navigators are produced under the Pioneer brand. It is often said that these navigators are best suited to our realities, because unlicensed navigation packages can be installed on them. In fact, there are about a dozen real Pioneer navigators, they are equipped with the AVIC index. And you can see the really branded devices on the manufacturer's website. But what is present on our market under the guise of products of this venerable brand, sellers themselves sometimes cannot explain. It is believed that there are about a hundred different "pioneers" on sale in our open spaces. The market was flooded with a wave of counterfeits and those who want to join it, making money on it. So what kind of brand quality can we talk about in these conditions? Most often, it is not known where exactly such navigators are made, what components are used in this case, whether there is quality control. Under the same name, there are different models made at different factories and using different element base. Therefore, if you look for the brand quality "Pioneer", then you should pay attention to the AVIC series. And they began to forge this brand because of the fame, sonority of the trademark. And in Ukraine, for example, this product is not officially supplied.

Navigators need voice notification functions. This myth can scare those who do not understand these devices. In fact, this function is not at all the device itself, but the program installed in it. In order for the navigator to announce a turn or direction of movement by voice, it just needs a speaker. The alert function is needed to notify the driver about the specifics of the route. To be fair, it should be noted that almost all modern navigation programs have it.

Navigators communicate with American satellites. In fact, it should be understood that the device is an ordinary receiver. It can only receive signals, there is no talk of radiation here.

If you use GPS, the Americans will be able to track the location. Radiation from a navigator is as small as from a flashlight or camera. Accordingly, it is almost impossible to trace it.

The navigators lie, they don't have all the paths. Any navigator can usually display only the current location coordinates - latitude, longitude and altitude. The rest falls on the shoulders of the software itself loaded into this device. And if the electronic map does not have that very shallow stream, path or even road, then this is not a question for the device itself, but for its program. And do not think that it will somehow be able to download a map from a satellite, as some think.

Touch screens in navigators are inconvenient. It must be understood that convenience is a subjective factor. Many users believe that with the advent of touchscreens, and even capacitive screens in such devices, they have become much better controlled. The speed of work in the menu has increased - it is enough to click on the desired item, and not select it using the keys. However, reliability is not so simple. A broken sensor automatically makes the device "dead". The button device breaks less often.

GLONASS is better than GPS. Objectively speaking, the number of satellites in the Russian GLONASS constellation is half that of its American counterpart. In addition, under Clinton, artificial interference in the civilian range of GPS disappeared, which made the determination of coordinates more accurate. True, modern devices are able to work simultaneously with both systems, which will only benefit the accuracy.

It is better to choose a specialized navigator. It's no secret that today almost all smartphones, and many tablets, are equipped with a GPS chip. But how justified is their work as a navigator, or is it better to trust highly specialized devices specially designed for this? When smartphones had a screen with a diagonal of 2.8-3.5 inches, they clearly lost in the usability of 5-7 inch navigators. However, the mobile market has changed today. The sizes of smartphones have grown, there are models with 5 and even 6-inch screens. And tablets have displays ranging from 7 to 12 inches. The former gain in screen size has disappeared. However, it should be understood that the work of GPS in a phone or tablet is usually more power-consuming. Where an ordinary navigator will live the day, a smartphone can only help for a couple of hours. But if you use the device in a car, and not while walking, special charging will help. Today, the emphasis is on the versatility of gadgets. Smartphones can not only make calls, but also replace navigators, readers, tablets and cameras. So highly specialized navigators have practically lost their trump cards.
